History of SBC

The IdeaSBC's first building

In the summer of 1949, the ladies of the WMU of First Baptist Church saw the need for a Sunday School in the Edwards addition of Union City. After several weeks of prayer and planning, a committee recommended that the church buy a lot.  A building, 30' by 64', was erected with the first service on March 19, 1950.

Becoming a Church

Immediately, the new Sunday School began to grow and on August 6, 1951, the Chapel asked for status as a church.  Two weeks later, on August 20th, the Second Baptist Church of Union City became a reality.  Bro. David Smith, who had served as pastor of the chapel, brought the message.

Through the years, many souls have been saved and many ministered to in the name of Jesus.  Several men have been called to preach and sent forth as Gospel Ministers.  Interest in Local and Foreign Mission Work has been evidenced by prayer support, giving, and Mission involvement in the local community, Beulah Baptist Association, Tennesee Baptist Convention, and Southern Baptist Convention.

Many Changes

The look of the Church facilities changed much over the years with its modifications.  The first addition was a two-story educational building to the rear of the original chapel.  The men of the church provided most of the labor for the project.  A pastorium was constructed in 1956 and on Mother's day of 1959, a new 500+ seat auditorium was dedicated.

The 1960's brought numerous changes in the structure.  Another two-story education complex which included new church offices, fellowship facilities, library and many new department classrooms.

In 1988, another addition was built which included a large youth facilities, a much larger fellowship hall, larger kitchen, more restrooms and relocation of the church offices.  Other renovations were added, along with a steeple for the auditorium.  The church also made the move to a computerized membership and accounting system during these renovations.
